Sedation Dentistry

Patient comfort is a priority at Commonwealth Dentistry. Many patients experience dental anxiety and are fearful of their dental visits. Sedation dentistry is an excellent option for anxious patients. Sedation is accomplished through an oral medication method or an intravenous (IV) method, placing the patient in a conscious, but thoroughly relaxed state. We also offer our patients nitrous oxide (laughing gas) as a lighter option of relaxation.

Oral Sedation

  • Oral sedation utilizes a prescription drug that induces a drowsy and very relaxed feeling
  • The medication is given orally
  • Patients must be driven to and from the office
  • Patients must have nothing to eat or drink for at least 6 hours preceding the appointment
  • The patient is monitored throughout the appointment

IV Sedation

  • The patient is administered medication intravenously
  • Patients must be driven to and from the office
  • The patient is monitored throughout the appointment
  • Patients must have nothing to eat or drink for at least 6 hours preceding the appointment
  • Most patients sleep through the appointment and have little memory of the experience
